When it comes to equipment it depends on a number of factors such as goals, age, fitness level and ability. Generally machines are better for the beginner because they provide more stability than free weights. However, machines may be limited in the exercises and weight increments that you can perform. Free weights and cable pulley machines can be more versatile in that sense but require better skill on the part of the participant. An effective weight training program can be designed with exercises that use the participants body weight and thus without the need for “weights”. It is important to design and implement a program that is safe effective and fun.
